Google at the beginning of the year 2006 has announced a brand new product that is called the “ Google Pack”. It is actually a selection of more than ten software packages that include antispyware and antivirus software as well. All theses software are available for free. There is an installer at the core of the Google Pack. Installer makes it easy to manage and keep all the software updated.
At the beginning Google offered two good antispyware and antivirus software programs. The antivirus software it offered initially was Symantec’s Norton Antivirus 2005. Though it was not the latest edition but was a good antivirus solution. But the major drawback of this security software was that the free virus detection period was limited to only 6 months, after that user needed the upgradation of the software.
The antispyware software program Google used to offer was presented by Lavasoft. This antispyware program was called Ad-Aware SE. But this software by then was already available in some sites such as Cnet’s Downlad.com for free. The spyware identification power of that software was average. The users also needed to update the spyware definition and start scanning the system manually.
In the year 2007 Google replaced the antispyware and antivirus software programs initially offered by them in the “Google Pack”. Though the antivirus was still provided by Symantec but Norton Antivirus 2005 was no more in the pack. It was replaced by a special version of Norton Security Scan that along with scanning eliminates the virus threats too. This latest antivirus software was a part of the award-winning Norton Antivirus family. Moreover, it has the facility of free update and has no time limit.
Like the antivirus software the antispyware software was also replace by Google. Spyware Doctor Starter Edition took its position in the Google Pack. Spyware Doctor always retains its high position in most of all magazine tests. Its closest competitor is Webroot’s Spyware Sweeper with whom it always fights to occupy the first or second position. Though it misses some active spyware identification features it is quite strong in scanning and identifying spyware threats. It is offered for free and to updation is needed.
Google Pack also carries lots of other brilliant application software. It will be good for you to download the Google Pack to get Spyware Doctor and Norton Security Scan if you want to keep your computer safe from malware attacks.

Night vision goggles are optical instruments, which allow images to be produced in low levels of light, nearing night. These instruments are usually used by law enforcement and military agencies and but are also used by civilians. These devices are different from binoculars though often confused with them.
Here are some things that are required if you want to know how to make night vision goggles. The image intensifier tube was the invention, which made the invention of night vision devices, including goggles possible. The image intensifier is a tube that is able to convert photons in to electrons and is able to amplify even minute quantities of light making it possible to see in the darkness.
The mechanism of the tube is that when the light enters the objective lens, it strikes a photo cathode, which also carries an energy charge. This charge travels through the intensifier to convert photons into electrons and then strikes a phosphor screen on which the image gets illuminated. It is the function of the ocular lenses on the goggles to help in focusing on the images.
There is another type of night vision googles too, which uses thermal imaging to make night vision possible. This kind of night vision goggles use the heat of electro-magnetic radiation, which is emitted by most objects, be they living or non-living. Because of this, thermal imaging night vision goggles are able to use these heat signatures in order to display an image of the object.
These night vision devices win over the light intensifier night vision goggles because of the fact that they require no light at all to be made active and can therefore be used in places where there is no light such as in hazes and fogs.
Now that you know about the elements that go into night vision goggles, you can try and see how to make night vision goggles of your own!

If you are about to assemble your own computer, you should first recognize the functions of each most important components of a computer before you go and purchase its parts. It’s simple to attach these PC components so you don’t need to be anxious about how you can possibly build your own PC. Here’s a plain list of personal computer components that you must remember especially when you are planning to construct your computer. This can help you decide on which components to obtain especially if you are new to this fad or don’t have any idea what these parts are for.
Motherboard: In case you’ve chosen the CPU, you can select the appropriate motherboard of the same socket type. There are many features to keep in mind when buying a CPU like how many PCI expansion holes that you will need and if you need a built in video on the motherboard or the additional one. Now, most motherboards are inclusive of sound and video on board but if you are going to use your personal computer for heavy-duty gaming then a separate video card is advisable.
Hard Drive: When selecting a hard drive for your personal computer, you should ask yourself how much storage capacity you should have. If you are going to use your personal computer mostly to do homework or research then 40GBs hard drive will be enough space for you to use. However, for those who will use their computers to edit videos and the like then they should acquire around 250GBs or more storage. A quick hard drive is also recommended when you need to get analog video using your PC to avoid dropped frames.
CD/DVD: You can still get very dependable but plain CD-ROMs in the marketplace today however since CD and DVD are frequently used as medium of exchange for information then a first class rewritable combo drive is a better alternative than plain CD-ROMs. Any rewritable combo drive is very helpful especially when you want to share personal movies to your friends and relatives. It’s much rational to waste a few more money for a drive that will do DVDs along with CDs than plain CD-ROMs.
Floppy: There are lots of people that have removed floppy drives in their personal computers. Though they can provide a means to maintain your PC that is crippled by a virus but that can as well be answered with a high-quality anti virus software plus the knowledge on how to make use of your computer correctly. Another reason why smaller numbers of people are making use of Floppy disk is for the reason that Flash Drive has become cheaper as well as its ability to accumulate incredible amount of details as matched up to Floppy disks.
Graphics Card: If you chose to use your PC for tough gaming then a good Graphic card is needed. You can still play games by making use of the built in video on the motherboard but for utmost gaming performance, obtain the most excellent Graphic card that you can get. Just keep in mind that the more memory on the card, the more improved it is for games and more. Persons who do photo manipulation or video control also needs high video cards.
Modem: If you are still trapped with dialup then buy yourself a 56K modem. You discover modems at more inexpensive prices nowadays. You may also want to verify available internet providers in your area. DSL and Broadband connections are cheaper today than before. If you have concluded to use a DSL or Broadband connection, then you should verify the motherboard if it provides a built in LAN card. If not, you should also buy a sample.
Case: The computer casing contains these entire modern apparatus together. Personal computer casings now are not anymore arranged to tower types or similar to a box with air holes punched in it. Box and compact type are several computer case designs that you will get in the marketplace nowadays.
Power Supply: The major worries of individuals who need to put up their own PC is the power supply. You may choose the perfect computer case that you need although you will be irritated with the power supply that the manufacturers paired up with that personal computer box. Sometimes, At times, Most of the time you can even locate a PC case that is enhanced with a power supply less than 300 watts. If you’re addicted to games, you will need a power supply that supplies 450 watts or more.
Case fans: You might want a number of add-ons to put together in the package. Just like including neon lights or extra cooling fan to your PC casing. Your personal computer hardware parts (like processor, motherboard, graphic cards, hard drives and etc.) create lots of heat and can influence your personal computer’s operation when you utilize it. A better cooling system may preserve your computer in fine operating form. Over heat in your personal computer can produce PC issues such as system freezes or break down and short-term existence for overheated parts. Additional cooling fans produces a more improved airflow for the purpose of dropping the heat, providing ventilation, exhaust, or any other gaseous transport.
Memory: PC memory is also called as PC data storage. This is the personal computer part that sustains digital data or information. It is one of the vital components of most recent personal computers. The most common structure of semiconductor storage is identified as random access memory (RAM) which also pertains to primary storage. Other styles of fast but short-term storage consist of optical discs, hard disks, and a lot more which are identified as secondary storage.

Definition of a ‘Robot’
According to the Robot Institute of America (1979) a robot is:
“A reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools, or specialized devices through various programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks”.
A more inspiring definition can be found in Webster. According to Webster a robot is:
“An automatic device that performs functions normally ascribed to humans or a machine in the form of a human.”
First use of the word ‘Robot’
The acclaimed Czech playwright Karel Capek (1890-1938) made the first use of the word ‘robot’, from the Czech word for forced labor or serf. Capek was reportedly several times a candidate for the Nobel prize for his works and very influential and prolific as a writer and playwright.
The use of the word Robot was introduced into his play R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) which opened in Prague in January 1921.
In R.U.R., Capek poses a paradise, where the machines initially bring so many benefits but in the end bring an equal amount of blight in the form of unemployment and social unrest.
The play was an enormous success and productions soon opened throughout Europe and the U.S. R.U.R’s theme, in part, was the dehumanization of man in a technological civilization.
You may find it surprising that the robots were not mechanical in nature but were created through chemical means. In fact, in an essay written in 1935, Capek strongly fought that this idea was at all possible and, writing in the third person, said:
“It is with horror, frankly, that he rejects all responsibility for the idea that metal contraptions could ever replace human beings, and that by means of wires they could awaken something like life, love, or rebellion. He would deem this dark prospect to be either an overestimation of machines, or a grave offence against life.”
[The Author of Robots Defends Himself - Karl Capek, Lidove noviny, June 9, 1935, translation: Bean Comrada]
There is some evidence that the word robot was actually coined by Karl’s brother Josef, a writer in his own right. In a short letter, Capek writes that he asked Josef what he should call the artificial workers in his new play.
Karel suggests Labori, which he thinks too ‘bookish’ and his brother mutters “then call them Robots” and turns back to his work, and so from a curt response we have the word robot.
First use of the word ‘Robotics’
The word ‘robotics’ was first used in Runaround, a short story published in 1942, by Isaac Asimov (born Jan. 2, 1920, died Apr. 6, 1992). I, Robot, a collection of several of these stories, was published in 1950.
One of the first robots Asimov wrote about was a robotherapist. A modern counterpart to Asimov’s fictional character is Eliza. Eliza was born in 1966 by a Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor Joseph Weizenbaum who wrote Eliza — a computer program for the study of natural language communication between man and machine.
She was initially programmed with 240 lines of code to simulate a psychotherapist by answering questions with questions.
Three Laws of Robotics
Asimov also proposed his three “Laws of Robotics”, and he later added a ‘zeroth law’.
Law Zero: A robot may not injure humanity, or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.
Law One: A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm, unless this would violate a higher order law.
Law Two: A robot must obey orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with a higher order law.
Law Three: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with a higher order law.
The First Robot: ‘Unimate’
After the technology explosion during World War II, in 1956, a historic meeting occurs between George C. Devol, a successful inventor and entrepreneur, and engineer Joseph F. Engelberger, over cocktails the two discuss the writings of Isaac Asimov.
Together they made a serious and commercially successful effort to develop a real, working robot. They persuaded Norman Schafler of Condec Corporation in Danbury that they had the basis of a commercial success.
Engelberger started a manufacturing company ‘Unimation’ which stood for universal automation and so the first commercial company to make robots was formed. Devol wrote the necessary patents. Their first robot nicknamed the ‘Unimate’. As a result, Engelberger has been called the ‘father of robotics.’
The first Unimate was installed at a General Motors plant to work with heated die-casting machines. In fact most Unimates were sold to extract die castings from die casting machines and to perform spot welding on auto bodies, both tasks being particularly hateful jobs for people.
Both applications were commercially successful, i.e., the robots worked reliably and saved money by replacing people. An industry was spawned and a variety of other tasks were also performed by robots, such as loading and unloading machine tools.
Ultimately Westinghouse acquired Unimation and the entrepreneurs’ dream of wealth was achieved. Unimation is still in production today, with robots for sale.
The robot idea was hyped to the skies and became high fashion in the Boardroom. Presidents of large corporations bought them, for about $100,000 each, just to put into laboratories to “see what they could do;” in fact these sales constituted a large part of the robot market. Some companies even reduced their ROI (Return On Investment criteria for investment) for robots to encourage their use.
Modern Industrial Robots
The image of the “electronic brain” as the principal part of the robot was pervasive. Computer scientists were put in charge of robot departments of robot customers and of factories of robot makers. Many of these people knew little about machinery or manufacturing but assumed that they did.
(There is a common delusion of electrical engineers that mechanical phenomena are simple because they are visible. Variable friction, the effects of burrs, minimum and redundant constraints, nonlinearities, variations in work pieces, accommodation to hostile environments and hostile people, etc. are like the “Purloined Letter” in Poe’s story, right in front of the eye, yet unseen.) They also had little training in the industrial engineer’s realm of material handling, manufacturing processes, manufacturing economics and human behavior in factories.
As a result, many of the experimental tasks in those laboratories were made to fit their robot’s capabilities but had little to do with the real tasks of the factory.
Modern industrial arms have increased in capability and performance through controller and language development, improved mechanisms, sensing, and drive systems. In the early to mid 80’s the robot industry grew very fast primarily due to large investments by the automotive industry.
The quick leap into the factory of the future turned into a plunge when the integration and economic viability of these efforts proved disastrous. The robot industry has only recently recovered to mid-80’s revenue levels.
In the meantime there has been an enormous shakeout in the robot industry. In the US, for example, only one US company, Adept, remains in the production industrial robot arm business. Most of the rest went under, consolidated, or were sold to European and Japanese companies.
In the research community the first automata were probably Grey Walter’s machina (1940’s) and the John’s Hopkins beast. Teleoperated or remote controlled devices had been built even earlier with at least the first radio controlled vehicles built by Nikola Tesla in the 1890’s.
Tesla is better known as the inventor of the induction motor, AC power transmission, and numerous other electrical devices. Tesla had also envisioned smart mechanisms that were as capable as humans.
An excellent biography of Tesla is Margaret Cheney’s Tesla, Man Out of Time, Published by Prentice-Hall, c1981.
SRI’s Shakey navigated highly structured indoor environments in the late 60’s and Moravec’s Stanford Cart was the first to attempt natural outdoor scenes in the late 70’s.
From that time there has been a proliferation of work in autonomous driving machines that cruise at highway speeds and navigate outdoor terrains in commercial applications.
Fully functioning androids (robots that look like human beings) are many years away due to the many problems that must be solved. However, real, working, sophisticated robots are in use today and they are revolutionizing the workplace.
These robots do not resemble the romantic android concept of robots. They are industrial manipulators and are really computer controlled “arms and hands”. Industrial robots are so different to the popular image that it would be easy for the average person not to recognize one.
Benefits
Robots offer specific benefits to workers, industries and countries. If introduced correctly, industrial robots can improve the quality of life by freeing workers from dirty, boring, dangerous and heavy labor. it is true that robots can cause unemployment by replacing human workers but robots also create jobs: robot technicians, salesmen, engineers, programmers and supervisors.
The benefits of robots to industry include improved management control and productivity and consistently high quality products. Industrial robots can work tirelessly night and day on an assembly line without an loss in performance.
Consequently, they can greatly reduce the costs of manufactured goods. As a result of these industrial benefits, countries that effectively use robots in their industries will have an economic advantage on world market

Two Ways to Bypass a Proxy Server
Author: Creztor Tessel
If you want to bypass a proxy server, be it while at work or at school, you have two options available to you. The first is simple and easy and involves only your web browser. It is strongly recommend that you attempt to solve your proxy server problem using this first solution. If this first solution fails, then there is a second option. The second option is a little more complex but may be necessary if the first solution does not deliver. Either way, if you want to bypass any proxy server, these are to two best solutions available regardless of who or where you may live and what kind of proxy server you are trying to bypass.
If you are lucky enough, bypassing the proxy at your work or school may be as simple as disabling it in your web browser. Many schools and work places have all computers setup to access the internet through their central proxy server. This is the reason why you may be unable to access some websites from work or school. Your computer is first connecting to the proxy server and then trying to access your website, which is in turn being detected and denied by the proxy server. Check the internet connection settings of your web browser and check to see if the proxy server details are set up in your web browser. If they are, try to disable them and connect to the internet again. You may find that with some luck the proxy server is disabled but you are now able to access the web normally.
The second method to bypass a proxy server is a little more complex, but will work regardless of the kind of proxy you are trying to bypass. Many schools or offices block specific websites (such as social networking or classified sites) and this is usually why you may have trouble accessing them. They do this usually with the goal of stopping students or employees from wasting valuable time online visiting unproductive websites. However, your school or office does not and cannot block the entire internet. Instead they block specific websites based on their website url or IP address. Therefore, you are free to access a proxy server which then redirects your connection to your desired website allowing you to access the blocked website even from work or school. Basically, your computer at school or work is connecting to a website that isn’t blocked by your school or work place. Then, you use that website to connect again to the original website you wanted to access but which is blocked. Why and how can this work? Simply, your school or work place proxy server can only see you connecting to the first website. It doesn’t know that you are going one step further and connecting to a second and blocked website.
To bypass a proxy server, first check to see if your web browser at work or school is setup to access the proxy. Disable it and try again. As a last resort, you may need to setup your own elite proxy in order to access websites while at work or school.

As Search Engines optimization Grow Smarter, Will You?
Author: Rahul awasthi
As search gets smarter, tricks get cheaper and we get nearer to coming full circle to an original goal of Internet search: that content is, indeed, king. It cuts across the grain of some notions we’ve held in the industry for some time, that there are shortcuts aplenty in the hunt for better search rankings. Search experts at ICMediaDirect.com dissuade clients from thinking that they can or should fool Google and Yahoo. Instead, we show them solid methodology that works. Above all else, your website needs superior content that anchors your search engine optimization strategy.
Algorithmic innovation, much of it by Google’s engineers, has thankfully rendered search engine spamming a fruitless endeavor. This has made the search engine a far greater tool for us to use and, in turn, has sparked the online advertising industry.
Nevertheless, Google and other search engines closely guard their Search secrets. Their constant tweaking compels smart webmasters to not rely on keyword strategy alone. Your site must be prepared to weather the ensuing fallout from any change in web-crawler browsing instigated by their engineers in those far-off, unseen laboratories. Any quest for keyword perfection is folly by nature, since that success is fleeting.
Search engines take link relevancy into account when ranking webpages. As a search engine optimizer it’s important for you to keep your “white hat” on. This means, for the uninitiated, that instead of spamdexing or deceiving the search engine through trickery, you employ ethical means to achieve ranking. Crime doesn’t pay in the search world because deceptive sites get shown the door and no site can afford to pay that price.
Google recently caught BMW’s websites gaming the system and the company’s sites were essentially blacklisted from the results listings. Did BMW not have enough confidence in the quality of their cars and motorcycles or was their online optimizer getting too cute? No matter, it’s BMW’s problem; one nobody needs to have.
Your white hat optimization entails shoring up whatever online relationships you can with other sites for link exchange, promoting your site with new ones for more link exchange, and joining web directories. This is not an instantaneous process, like most SEO work, but it is indispensable for your long-term online planning.
After dashing any notion of SEO trickery from our repertoire we focus on content. Content requires actual work, anathema, perhaps, to those seeking quick rewards with no effort, but this work pays off. You’re charged with producing fresh, relevant content that - gulp - someone might even want to read!
I’ve yet to hear of a web crawling spider that purchases anything online. Until this starts happening (hey, we rule out nothing at ICMediaDirect.com), you should start writing (or rewriting) your website’s content with an ideal reader in mind: your customer. For instance, if you’re marketing rock-climbing gear, sell that helmet, weave the thrill of the sport into your language and not a language of sugar and carrots you believe will attract Google or Yahoo. Be genuine.
State the aim of your site’s business by using clear and direct language early in your text, or “up there” on the page. Indirectness or misleading intros may not only divert the attention of people and cause them to leave, but the same for web crawlers, too. State your business early. Remember: simple beats complex in the SEO arena.
The goal is to win people over. It bears repeating that loading text with a barrage of related keywords that doesn’t keep with a natural flow of language is not going to work, on any level. Did you know that search engines can pick out the poor structural balance in language? They actually pick out overly optimized sites. Those flagged sites can go fish because their ranking is then shot. The lesson here is to work with the system.
Now your content is written. After having a second (and third) person read it over to find any inaccuracies or grammar mistakes, you supplement its structure. It’s time to optimize the text with keywords. But not too much. While it’s okay for a reader to notice repeats of a word throughout the written content, it’s too much when it distracts from the message. Use keywords at the beginning, end, and in header text. Review your text and see where you might re-work some more keywords. Be creative and thorough in these efforts and do not to exceed a 20:1 prose-to-keyword ratio within the copy.
Search algorithms scan text, not pictures. Therefore, it’s important to front-load relevant text onto your homepage, even to a point where you might think there’s too much text. Don’t worry about that. Remember that first time visitors to your webpage who come via search engine are arriving because they’re looking for something specific. Your homepage isn’t a billboard attracting the attention of motorists. Your objective is to “close” on those already interested. If they’re not ready to read a couple of paragraphs, they’re not ready to buy.
This isn’t to say that images are unimportant. They can actually be a tremendous search resource. You should slip in keywords when filling out your image’s alternate text description. Make them fit the keywords of your site and try to have the description of the pictures match the keywords, as well. This way “Image Search” functions of search engines will provide any number of interested queries. This is an area that is a) not nearly as optimized as text and b) increasing in aggregate search numbers. A well optimized image selection for your site could pay off serious dividends, while random descriptions for your imagery will fritter this chance away.
Spellcheck. Use it, that’s what it’s there for. There is no excuse for a poorly written website that smacks of amateurism. Sloppy efforts tend to spook page viewers from doing business. If you’re not up to writing articles for whatever reason, you can hire a professional copywriter for the job. ICMediaDirect.com has them, if need be, one shouldn’t be hard to find.
Any expense taken in regards to your website is a mere pittance when compared to the disparity in value between a well-written site and a poorly written one. Website quality is too important for a business to trifle with. A good web copywriter is well-versed in keyword utilization and can make your specific directives look natural and effortless.
Search engines are getting smarter almost daily and continue to level the playing fields in the process. Subsequently, Search Engine Optimization has turned away from gamesmanship and towards crafting quality websites. Those who put in extra effort will be the ones to reap the long-term SEO benefits and, ultimately, more business.
Good luck.

Looking for a free proxy server? You better be careful. Free isn’t always good. There are hundreds if not thousands of sites online where you can find a free public proxy server. But ask yourself, why do you want to use a proxy server? If it is to remain anonymous or change your IP online, then using a free proxy is probably the worst thing you can possibly do. Free proxy servers can potentially reveal your identity and other confidential information while online.
Free proxies are usually web based and the scripts or software that runs them is typically very simple and basic. Can web based proxies provide some kind of anonymity online? Yes, they can but with a catch. Web based free proxies might be anonymous, but the problem is that they are easily detected as a proxy server. Their simple configuration and setup means that anyone with the right tools (which are easily available) can easily detect if an IP comes from a web based proxy. What does this mean for you if you are using a free proxy while trying to remain anonymous online? It means that any website can easily examine the IP you are using to access their website and see within moments whether or not you are using a proxy server. How easy would it be for them to quickly ban or block any further attempts by you to access the website? This isn’t really anonymous and web masters typically do not like IPs coming from known proxy servers accessing their websites.
Even if you are lucky enough to find a free proxy that is anonymous and doesn’t reveal itself as a proxy to anyone with the right tools who can examine IPs, web based proxies are infamous for how slow they can be while trying to surf the internet. They are often so slow that it makes using them almost impossible or at the very least extremely painful and time consuming. It can often take several minutes for simple text based web pages to load. In fact, surfing the internet via free proxies can sometimes be much slower than using dial up modems to access the internet. Why can free proxies be so slow? Since they are free, hundreds if not thousands of people are typically all trying to use a free proxy at the same time. This enormous amount of people far exceeds the number of users the proxy server and hosting can physically handle. There isn’t enough bandwidth and CPU power to distribute evenly amongst so many users. The end result is that free proxies can basically be impossible to use to surf the internet.
Finding a free public proxy server that is both 100% anonymous and fast is almost impossible or at the very least can be extremely time consuming. Instead of wasting your time on free proxies, look to setting up your own elite proxy server to save you time and frustration. You’ll have super fast access to the internet with 100% anonymity and peace of mind.

The easiest way to learn Linux permissions is from an example. The ls -l command generates a list of contents, such as files along with their permissions. Let’s take a look at the default values for a file called Filename. We are adding spaces to make the output more legible.
- rw- r– r– other information about the file Filename
The initial - signifies that this is a file (not a directory). The next three characters refer to the file permissions for the file owner, in many cases the person who created the file. The values rw- signify that the owner has read and write (modify) permission but not execute permission. Had these values been r-x the owner would be allowed to read and execute the file (program) but could not modify it. The second set of values r– signify that the members of the group associated with this file have read but not write or execute permission. The third set of values once again r– signify that other users have read but not write or execute permission.
Permissions are often handled numerically. The r has a value of 4, the w has a value of 2, and the x has a value of 1. In all cases the lack of permission has the value 0. So rw- has the value 6 and r– has the value 4. In the above example the permissions may be expressed as 644. The full set of permissions for everyone is expressed as 777 (not usually a good idea).
Note that the root user’s permissions aren’t listed. This shouldn’t be surprising because root has essentially complete permissions. But even root doesn’t have execute permissions for a file it creates. This permission must be added in a separate step. Why? This two-step procedure has important security implications. Let’s say that an individual, perhaps root, has received an email that contains a virus-infested executable program. The program cannot be executed without the explicit permission of root or the recipient. If the user doesn’t know what to do the virus won’t be launched.
Linux defines permissions for directories that are similar to but not exactly the same as the file permissions. A read permission on a directory means that its contents may be listed. A write permission on a directory means that the user can modify its contents by adding, deleting, or renaming files. An execute permission on a directory means that it may be accessed, in other words made the current working directory.
Permissions may be changed via the chmod command. For example chmod 770 Junque which gives read, write, and execute permissions to the file owner and members of the ownership group but no permissions to anyone else. Not everyone likes working with these numbers. The symbolic mode uses letters and the plus and minus signs to change permissions.
The following command removes the write permission from the user (owner) of the Perm file chmod u-w Perm. To add the execute permission for others, people who do not belong to the group that owns the file, apply the command chmod o+x Perm. This command only makes sense if the Perm file is executable. Furthermore, under most circumstances the file owner and his or her group will have more permissions that the others. Linux doesn’t check to see that your command really makes sense. Do you think that Windows is more intelligent in this respect?
The chown command is used to change the ownership of a file or a directory. The chgrp command is used to change the group ownership of files and directories. These commands might be used when a project passes from the development to the testing stage. Needless to say only the system administrator can execute these commands.
Of course there are additional aspects of Linux permissions and groups but we have covered the basics. The next article in this series discusses inodes, a topic that is sorely missing from the Windows bag of tricks.
